What We Do

Testimonials

We have collaborated with Practical Ecology on numerous projects and have consistently been impressed by their professionalism, expertise,

and more importantly their responsiveness. Their straightforward, practical advice has been instrumental in helping our projects successfully address ecological considerations and

planning requirements.

Practical Ecology solve problems rather than create them. They're proactive, they get ahead of issues and know their stuff better than all ecologists I've worked with over more than 30 years in planning. They're our first choice.

5* HW Developments has worked with Practical Ecology for a number of years, and they have consistently provided a professional, reliable, and high-quality service. Their team is knowledgable, responsive, and always delivers the ecological support we need for our developments. We would highly recommend Practical Ecology to anyone looking for expert ecological consultancy services.

Possible Ink Stain Bolete 🍄‍🟫 found by Cyrise in the car park! A distinctive woodland mushroom that can develop dark, inky stains when bruised or handled. What a brilliant unexpected find.

As we get towards the end of bat survey season at Practical Ecology Ltd, tonight we had some very eager junior ecologists on site. 🦇

They were curious, excited, and keen to learn every time a bat appeared, completely absorbed in helping us check and update monitoring on known roosts for a wildlife trust.

A brilliant way to wrap up the summer holidays and to share the experience with some of our youngest team members.

💚 Whenever there’s a break in the busy survey season, our Ecologist Vic enjoys setting up her moth trap to discover the incredible species that emerge after dark.

One of the highlights from a recent evening was the beautiful Elephant Hawk-Moth (Deilephila elpenor), with its vibrant pink and olive green colouring making it one of the UK’s most recognisable moths.

These evening sessions are a fantastic opportunity to sharpen identification skills, share knowledge across the team and gain valuable insights into the diversity of moths in our local landscapes.

Volunteering Day 🌿

At the start of the week we carried out botanical surveys at Lopham and Redgrave Fen for Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

Following a comprehensive survey of the entire fen in 2024, changes were made to the management of several areas based on the report’s recommendations. Our role was to resurvey those areas to assess how the vegetation has responded and whether the new management practices are having the desired positive impact.

It’s always rewarding to contribute to monitoring and conservation work that helps protect these important habitats for the future. 🌱

Recent Water Vole Survey

A recent site visit gave us some great signs that water voles are active in the area.

📸 Photo 1: Water vole feeding remains. One of the key identification features is the distinctive angled cut they leave on grass and other vegetation. Unlike rabbits or other herbivores, water voles have a characteristic feeding technique that leaves behind neatly cut stems at an angle.

📸 Photo 2: A water vole feeding station, where feeding remains have accumulated over time. These piles of discarded vegetation are another valuable field sign, helping ecologists confirm the presence of this protected species, even when the animals themselves remain hidden.
